Why this work is personal

John’s own healthcare journey changed the direction of his life.

Over approximately seven years, MRSA recurred 17 times and John spent 213 total days hospitalized. The infection affected his spine at T6–T7 and L2–L3, permanently changing his mobility and daily life. After the seventeenth recurrence, while finally recovering, he decided to use that experience to help patients and families.

That journey led him to patient advocacy: work grounded in careful listening, respectful communication, thorough preparation, and the belief that people deserve to understand their care and participate meaningfully in decisions.

Before founding DJB Advocacy, John spent 39 years as an owner and operator of multiple businesses, including Select Woodworking in architectural woodworking. Its work appeared in 22 Cincinnati Homearama homes as well as high-end residential and commercial projects.

I know what it feels like to be sick, afraid, and overwhelmed. I cannot promise a particular outcome, but I can promise to show up, pay attention, ask questions, and help make sure you are not facing it alone.D. John Bishop
